Elon Berty Howell

Elon Berty Howell, 80, of Jena, died Thursday, February 21, 2002 at the 
St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria.

He was a retired engineer in the oil field, a 32nd degree Mason and 
Shriner and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II.

He was born March 11, 1921 to the union of Robert Neely and Nancie Ellie
Smith Howell.

Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at Liberty
Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Bobby Dunn officiating.

Internment followed at Liberty Chapel Cemetery under direction of Kinner
and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

Survivors include his wife, Lenora May Howell of Jena; one sister, Iva 
Lea Howell Elliot; brother in law, Kendall Leonard Elliot; nephew David 
Kendall Elliot.

Pallbearers were Jay May, Sr.; Jay May, Jr.; Elon Hunter Bradford; 
Jerry McDougal; Chester McDougal and Herby Otwell.

Footnote added by submitter: He was retired from Hughes Tool Company of
Houston, Tx. He was married Jan. 13, 1942 to Lenora Eula May. Elon and 
Lenora devoted many years to family records research. Buried at Liberty 
Chapel with his parents; Robert Neely Howell 5/18/1896 Tenn - 12/06/1936
and Nancy Ellie Smith 10/15/1898 - 12/3/1934; paternal grandparents 
Robert Franklin Howell 11/18/1851 - 11/22/1927 and Sarilda Frances Hooper
8/20/1861 - 3/19/1945 who emigrated from Hardeman Co, Tenn to Winn Parish
in 1908; maternal grandmother Verbenia Lisabeth Thames Smith Deen 
3/12/1879 Fla - 11/18/1973 who married Oliver Berti Deen after the death
of Nancy Ellie's father, Edward L Smith.
