L. Howell, Jr. Victim Of Falling Log Accident Funeral services for M. L. Howell, Jr., 33, of Winnfield, who was killed by a falling log while unloading a truck at a Castor sawmill Tuesday, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at the Big Creek Baptist Church in the Jordan Hill Community. Rev. Glen Griffin and Rev. Willie Broadway officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The victim, who retired not too long ago from the Army after 12 years service, and entered the logging business, was killed instantly when a log fell from the top of his truck after he had loosened the binders. Mr. Howell was an independent contractor, delivering logs to the Martin Lumber Company mill at Castor when the accident occurred. The family had moved to Castor recently. Survivors include his widow, the former Jean O'Neal of Jordan Hill; one son, Rickey and three daughters, Phyllis Ann, Laura Jean, and Helen, all of Winnfield; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Howell of Castor; four brothers, Robert of Jonesboro, Lee Allen, Thomas, and Jimmy, all of Castor; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Clifton of Shreveport and Annie Belle Howell of Castor; and his maternal grandfather, W. B. Butler of Jonesboro.
