Hubbard, Sr. dies at residence. Date of death Oct.23,1951. Samuel W. Hubbard, Sr. 71, well known resident of Winnfield for the past 16 years died at his residence at 403 N.Jones St. after a lingering illness. A native of Chestnut Mound, Tenn., Mr. Hubbard was born on Sept.22,1880. He was married on Oct.16,1916 in Ruston & moved his family to Winnfield in 1935. Although he was employed as an insurance salesman for the past several years, he was active for most of his life in sawmill work. His first employment after moving to Winn Parish was supervising the construction of a sawmill and shingle mill near Saline Lake for P.F. Huddleston. He later set up the first sawmill operated by the Thomas Lumber Company, and at various times he constructed and sawed lumber for other smaller mills in this section. In addition to sawmill work he was also employed, prior to moving to Louisiana, as a thresher during wheat harvesting season. He is survived by his wife the former Mamie Haney, a native of Missouri; three sons, S.W. Hubbard, Jr. of Fort Wayne, Indiana, John C. Hubbard of Bossier City & James T. Hubbard of Hattisburg, Miss; two daughters, Mrs. Stella Skains of Winnfield and Mrs. Elizabeth Reinau of Florida; three brothers, Albert Hubbard of Elk City,Okla., Arthur Hubbard of Old Hickory, Tenn. and Oscar Hubbard of Santa Anna, Calif. and a sister, Mrs. Betty Sefton of St. Louis, Mo. Services were held at the residence with the Rev. Alvin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of the Southern Funeral Home. Active pallbearers included Earl Applewhite, Elton Brewton, Charlie Bright, Glenn Page, J.L. Prudhomme and Dennis Shell, and honorary pallbearers were R.T. Tucker, L.V. Harper, R.R. Pate of Ringgold and Ray Tarrer of Forest, Miss. Mr. Hubbard was a member of the Masonic Order. He was a popular figure in Winnfield, a fact attested to by the scores of acquaintances who paid their respects to the bereaved family at the residence and at his interment.
