W. Hughes Dies In Montgomery, La. Mother of Earl Hughes, of Winnfield, Is Buried at Mt. Zion Funeral services for Mrs. J. W. Hughes, who died on Thanksgiving Day, in Montgomery, were held at Mt. Zion last Friday afternoon. Mrs. F. G. Wardlow, assisted by F. L. Shows, G. J. L. Brown, and the Rev. J. R. Strozier and the Rev. C. W. Sherman held the services. Earl Hughes, of Winnfield, is one of the seven children who survive their mother. The others are Mrs. Jesse Boyett, Rochelle, Mrs. W. H. Jones, Herschell Hughes, Miss Lucille Hughes, and J. W. Hughes, all of Montgomery. The following is said about Mrs. Hughes' death in the Alexandria Town Talk: "Mrs. Hughes, the widow of J. W. Hughes, who died on January 28, 1927, was fifty-eight years old at the time of her death, and had been in failing health for several years. A member of the Methodist Protestant Church since early married life, throughout all these years she had been a devout and earnest Christian. Her life has been ever a lovely shining light to all who knew her and she seemed to radiate love, peace, goodness, and purity toward all with whom she came in contact. A friendly smile, a loving hand, a word of cheer and comfort, an earnest prayer will be gone from among us. And yet, will they be gone? "A deed once done, re-echoes on to eternity." Her life, its influence and meaning will ever be with us, to support and sustain us, to comfort and cheer, ever to beckon us on toward that higher life, that higher goal. Even her last words were in the form of a beautiful prayer, and a little while before she passed away, she breathed these words, "So sweet to trust in Him. Not a doubt. Not a shadow. I am ready and anxious to go.... "Mrs. Hughes was buried at Mt. Zion, in the Wheeling settlement, at which settlement she was born, reared and lived most of her married life, coming to Montgomery nearly two years ago. "A profusion of flowers softened and beautified the last services and a host of sympathizing friends stood by to comfort and cheer the bereaved family."
