Hanks; Oldest WHS Grad Succumbs Services for Mrs. Rubie Moss Hanks of Winnfield, La., were at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, October 9, 1991 in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Calvin Phelps officiating. Interment was in Winnfield City Cemetery. Mrs. Hanks, 98, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 1991 in Humana-Winn Parish Hospital. She was born November 13, 1892 in Grant Parish at Montgomery, La., daughter of Dr. Thomas A. Moss and Everallis E. Meredith Moss. Mrs. Hanks was graduated from the Winnfield High School in 1910 and was the oldest surviving graduate. Mrs. Hanks was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield, a member of the Baptist Women and Keenagers. She was a member of the Spicer-Wallace Chapter, D. A. R., the Readers Review Club, and American Association of Retired Persons. After working for the Louisiana State Library and as Librarian for Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Mrs. Hanks served 19 years as head librarian at Winn Parish Library. She ended her librarian's career with a year served as Director of Madison and Tensas Libraries. She was a member and past president of the Louisiana Library Association and a member of the American Library Association. Mrs. Hanks was preceded in death in 1942 of her only daughter, Elizabeth McCook. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Judge Cas Moss, Alan A. Moss, Herbert Moss and Joe Moss. Survivors include two local nieces, Ophelia Moss Storey and Annie Mae Moss Harrell, also a niece, two nephews and a number of great nieces and nephews.
