A lifelong Winn Parish resident, the tall slender "man with the long white whiskers" was a landmark in the Hart Community east of Sikes. His homespun philosophy, good natured boasting and deep humility won him a place in the hearts of everyone with whom he associated. A gentleman of the old school, he was a model of Southern chivalry. He loved to challenge men his age to footraces and consistently refused to believe he was not in the best of health. To prove it he often walked miles to visit neighbors and many mornings surprised Sikes fire tower observers by being at the top of the tower when they arrived for work. His walking hours were from sunup to sundown. He "got up with the chickens and went to bed with the chickens." A long illness preceded his death. He was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church, and was a devout believer in his religion. Funeral services were held Sunday at 10 a.m. at Hebron Baptist Church, with Rev. Cass Crain of the Winnsboro Baptist Church officiating. Interment was held in the Hebron Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cotman Hatten, whom he married in 1895; four children, Horace Hatten of Monroe, Rev. Huey Hatten of Rosepine, Mrs. Eula Jordan of Monroe, Mrs. Evie Grayson of Harrisburg, Pa.; two brothers, Ike Hatten of Winnfield and George Hatten of Olla; one sister, Mrs. Lou Jeanie Harper of Monroe; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
