Jackson, Age 88, Dies Fri. Jan. 27 at Calvin Pioneer Resident of Parish Also Confederate Veteran The death of James Monroe Jackson, age 88 years, 4 months, and 8 days, Friday, January 27th at Calvin marks the passing of one of the few remaining Confederate Veterans of Winn Parish. Coming to the parish in 1858 when 18 years of age he immediately identified himself with the progressive movements of the parish and since that time has been one of the outstanding men of the community. At the beginning of the Civil War, Mr. Jackson enlisted under the Confederate flag and faithfully and loyally served throughout the entire period of the war. During reconstruction days he was active in parish affairs and his activities continued until his advanced age compelled him to retire. He was a devout and consecrated christian, member of the Baptist Church since 1881 and his daily life was a mute testimony of the place his religion occupied in his life. On January 20, 1868 his marriage to May Elizabeth Mathis was solemnized and from the home they established have gone forth a large family of sons and daughters who are useful and progressive citizens. For several years Mr. Jackson has been in failing health but about one week before his death he was stricken with paralysis from which he never rallied, death coming quietly and peacefully Friday night, January 27 at 9 o'clock. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. H. Cullen, pastor of the Baptist Church of Winnfield, at the Sanders Church near Calvin Saturday afternoon, and the services were concluded at the grave with the Masons in charge. A large number of friends and relatives from the surrounding community attended the last rites. Surviving the deceased are his wife and ten children: Mrs. Jennie McLean, Goldonna; Mrs. Sidney Lowe, Mrs. Bettie Martin, Mrs. Christine Robbins, of Winnfield; Mrs. Ella Drummond, Mrs. Prentice Teagle and Sam Jackson, Calvin; Henry Jackson of Arcadia, Mrs. Linnie Kirkland of Gansville; Randle Jackson of Campti; one brother, Mat Jackson of Montgomery; twenty-five grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and many neices and nephews.
