"Uncle Dixie" was a well known figure of his community and numbered his friends among the "whites" as well as in his own race. He was about 76 years old at the time of his death. Uncle Dixie claimed that when he was twelve years old he was among the slaves who started with their masters to Texas during the Civil War. After reaching Sabine River they turned back when the army of General Banks retreated and his master settled on a plantation near where the old darky died. His shack home was built for him by both white and colored friends. (Submitted by Peggy Chandler Beaubouef, 2656 Hwy 1232, Winnfield, LA 71483)
