L. Smith of Winnfield, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Ladner, in Ponchatoula at noon Monday, December 19, 1949, following a long illness. She would have been 82 years old next May 13. Funeral services were conducted at the family home at 309 Wright Ave., Winnfield, Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. R. Houston Smith of Pineville, nephew of the deceased, officiating. Assisting with the services were the Rev. H. H. McBride, Rev. H. J. Mott, and Rev. C. M. Robinson. Burial was in the family plot in Big Creek Cemetery, Grant Parish, under direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Pallbearers were O. Trahan, Miley Walsworth, Jesse Corley, J. F. Walker, Congressman A. Leonard Allen, and E. L. McGuffee. A native of Seminary, Miss., Mrs. Smith moved with her family to Louisiana and resided in Grant Parish before coming to reside. She joined the Baptist Church in early childhood and was a faithful member throughout her life, being active in the work of the First Baptist Church and missionary society of Winnfield until her retirement because of ill health. Her husband, also active in the First Baptist Church, died May 31, 1947. Surviving are four sons and one daughter, A. L., Sr., and Houston Smith, Winnfield; Henry H. Smith, Monroe; James I. Smith, New Orleans; and Mrs. A. L. Ladner, Ponchatoula. She also leaves nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
