Jenkins Held Here Sunday Final rites for Sion E. Jenkins, 63 year old retired Winnfield postmaster, who died at his home while sitting in a chair at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 1960. Services were held at the Southern Funeral Home chapel here Sunday at 3 p.m. Officiating were Rev. Miley Walsworth, Rev. R. H. Staples, and Dr. W. L. Holcomb. Burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were Pat Harrell, Dennis Shell, R. D. Bevill, Arnett Garris, Melton Hightower, A. J. McCartney, Dr. John McElwee, and Dr. W. C. Cookston. Born in Ward Seven, Winn Parish, in 1891, Mr. Jenkins first worked in the shipbuilding trade and later served as superintendent of Southern Mineral Co. Rock Quarry. He entered postal service in 1920 as a substitute clerk in New Orleans, served as a rural carrier from 1926 to 1948 at Winnfield, and as postmaster here from 1948 to 1957. Mr. Jenkins was a member and past president of the Winnfield Lions Club, and an active civic worker including Red Cross and the Heart Fund, was chairman of the Winnfield Recreation Commission, and was a member of the First Baptist church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lillie Cupp Jenkins, Winnfield; one son, Dr. Sion Ray Jenkins, Winnfield; two brothers, J. M. Jenkins, Winnfield, and G. W. Jenkins of Springhill; three sisters, Mrs. Ella McDowell, Mrs. Olive DeJean and Mrs. Eva Hughes, all of Hodge.
