Mrs. Mattie Jenkins Buried At Zion Hill Cemetery August 18

Descendant of Pioneer Family of Winn Parish Succumbs After Long Illness

Mrs. Mattie M. Jenkins (nee Peters), widow of the late J. E. Jenkins, Baptist
minister, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fernand DeJean, of Hodge,
Thursday, August 17, at 11:45 a.m.  Mrs. Jenkins had been ill for the past
four months.  Her death, thought not unexpected, was a distinct shock to a
wide circle of friends and a host of relatives here, where she had resided for
the past thirty years.  The death of Mrs. Jenkins records the passing of the
last member and youngest child of a large family of children of the late
William and Marina McCarty Peters, one of the pioneer families of Winn Parish. 


The deceased was born in Winn Parish, October 20, 1869, and was 63 years, 9
months, and 27 days of age at the time of her death.  She was a member of the
First Baptist Church here and a member also of Palestine Chapter No. 55, O. E.
S.

Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church of Winnfield, at 2;30
Friday afternoon.  Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church
conducted the services with the assistance of Rev. John L. Dodge, pastor of
the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro.

Interment was made in the family burial plot at Zion Hill Cemetery, near here. 
Surviving the deceased are the following children: S. E. Jenkins, G. W.
Jenkins, J. M. Jenkins, and Mrs. Earl Hughes, of Winnfield; Mrs. T. J.
McDowell and Mrs. Fernand DeJean, of Hodge; Mrs. W. E. Harlan of Plaquemine.
