Roberts Poinsett Johnson, Jr. A native of Winnsboro, S.C., he died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at St. Patrick's Hospital, Lake Charles. He was 86. He served with the 8th Army Air Corps, European Theatre of Operations, primarily in England from 1942-45. From 1953-62, he was assigned to the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations in Dayton, Ohio. He served in Europe from 1953-55, in Washington, D.C., from 1955-58, and from 1958-62 was deputy director of OSI and commander of the 1005 Special Investigations Group. He then spent several years as commandant of the ROTC program at LSU. He retired from the Air Force as a colonel. During his military career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Commendation Medal and French Croix de Guerre with Palm. Visiting was at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Lake Charles, 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. Mark Holland. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery. Survived by wife, Dee Tannehill Johnson, Lake Charles; a son, the Rev. Roberts P. Johnson III, Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Beulah Johnson Wagner, Cody, Wyo.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of LSU Law School, where he served as chief justice of LSU honor court in 1935. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was elected national student president of DKE in 1934. He was a retired attorney for Powell Lumber Co., past president of Lake Charles Chamber of Commerce in 1972, a member and past president of Downtown Rotary Club, past district governor of Rotary International District 620, a member of Krewe of Contraband and Pioneer Club. He was a member and past senior warden of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity. Hixson Funeral Home, Lake Charles, was in charge of arrangements.
