All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: October 26, 1934 & Probably December 14, 1934 Winnfield News-American No. 1 Negro Held In Jail For Killing Negro Boy, 15, at Dodson Porter Bryant, negro residing at Dodson, is in the parish jail charged with the killing of Albert Joe, 15 year old negro boy whose home is at Hodge, last Saturday night near Dodson. According to Marvin Martin, another negro boy with Joe, the two of them had walked up to the fence of the cane patch belonging to Mr. Bryant and hearing someone in the cane asked if they could buy some cane. He states that a person, allegedly Bryant, refused to sell them cane and said that they had better be getting along for he was going to shoot whereupon Martin says he fled but Joe remained and as a result was shot by Bryant. Sheriff Bryant Sholars went immediately to the scene as soon as notified and took into custody Bryant, placing him in the parish jail. No. 2 Porter Bryant Is Convicted; Charged With Manslaughter Penalty From 1 to 20 Years For Killing Negro Boy 15 Verdict of manslaughter was returned against Porter Bryant, 59 year old negro farmer of Dodson, Wednesday afternoon in district court here for the killing of Albert Joe, negro boy age 15 on the night of October 20th. The verdict carries a penalty from one to twenty years in the state penitentiary. Jurors sitting on the case were G. W. Ray, Abb Dean, Frank Carpenter, Elbert Bazar, L. A. Parker, W. W. Downs, I. C. Adams, J. C. Erskins, R. E. Howard, Bob Bonsell, J. W. Boyd, and Zack Hodge. The case was given to the jury early in the afternoon on Wednesday and the report came in shortly after four o'clock. Porter Bryant was charged with the shooting of Albert Joe when the latter is supposed to have been in Bryant's cane patch and after he is alleged to have refused to sell the boy cane. Judge Wiley R. Jones deferred passing sentence until Saturday, Dec. 8th.
