Mrs. Jones had resided in Winnfield since 1867, and has wielded an influence for good over the citizenship of this section. MRS. SUSAN JONES, PIONEER CITIZEN, CLAIMED BY DEATH Funeral Held Sunday Last Charter Member of Local Church "When the final chapter in the town's history is written the name of Mary Susan Jones will not be written in bold face type by the present place and prosperity of the parish and town have indirectly come about by her weighty influence over the youths of the town who have subsequently held places of honor, responsibility and trust in the administration of the affairs of the town, parish and state" thus wrote Mrs. E.E. Kidd of the life of Mrs. Mary Susan Jones whose death occurred last Saturday morning about ten o'clock following an illness over a period of months. On November 6 this year "Aunt Susan" celebrated her eighty-ninth birthday when a number of her friends visited her bedside. For the past year she was very weak and helpless, which condition was aggravated by a fall a number of years ago in which she sustained a broken hip. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock conducted by Dr. B.C. Land pastor of the First Baptist Church and assisted by Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at the First Baptist Church of which the deceased was up until her death the only surviving charter member. Interment was made in the Winnfield cemetery. Born in Alabama November 6, 1846 Mrs. Jones moved to Winn Parish with her parents at the age of eleven, and here she has resided ever since. She was married to Robert Cassidy Jones, known to all Winn Parish as "Uncle Bob", on May 2, 1867. To them was born one son, Crockett Kelly Jones, who died soon after reaching manhood. "Uncle Bob" died in 1909. Mrs. Jones was a member of Palestine Chapter No. 55, O.E.S. and a charter member of the William Walker Chapter of U.D.C. She always manifested a keen interest in the affairs of the town and believed in preserving its historic landmarks. The residence in which she has lived for more than thirty years is the original courthouse which once stood on the self same spot where the present courthouse now stands. Because of its use as a temple where justice was tempered with mercy she took much pride in preserving the building as a monument of past history. During her long residence here Mrs. Jones witnessed a vast wilderness of white oaks, black jacks, long and short leaf pines with here and there a clearing for a dwelling and a few store houses, give way and become the present thriving town. She saw the first church house go up, the first brick building erected and the first railroad into the town and from the very beginning she was an optimistic believer in the ultimate progress and development of this community. Mrs. Jones' favorite song was one of the old sacred harp tunes: "I want to Live a Christian Here," and her favorite chapter in the Bible was the 92nd Psalm.
