All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: August 10, 1945 Winnfield News-American Aunt Emma Jones, Slave-Born Negro Dies Last Saturday Aunt Emma Jones, reckoned to be up in her nineties and possibly the oldest negro in these parts, died last Saturday morning. Aunt Emma was born a slave inthe Walker family of the Dodson vicinity and served as a house girl during her early girlhood and until she, with the other of her race was freed following the Civil War. She was the widow of Uncle Bill Jones, another slave born negro of these parts, and who preceded her in death several years ago. She was one of the dependable servants used by a number of the white families in Winnfield and served as "mammy" to the children of these families. Her visits among her "white folks" was always an event both to them and to her in her later years and whe was a welcome soul to many households. She was the mother of ten or more children, some of whom survive her. Funeral services will be held this morning at eleven o'clock at the Morning Star Baptist colored church and whe will be buried in Union Cemetery in Ward 8 this afternoon at two o'clock.
