Authorities resuced Allen Atwell, a cousin to the victim, who clung to a tree stump after the mishap. Both men had cushion type life preservers in their boat. Chief Deputy J. J. Crippen said the preservers were found floating near the scene. Atwell apparently was the lone witness and officials said he described himself as a poor swimmer. They said he apparently suffered from shock after the incident and refused aid offered by a passing fisherman who went to shore and called the sheriff. Sheriff Sanford Jordan said that Atwell told him the victim never surfaced after falling into the lake. John Carson, a volunteer searcher, located the body with a boat hook in 12-foot water near where the boat capsized. The body was recovered at 9 p.m. Sheriff Jordan said that the man may have been kept from helping himself because of heavy shoes which he was wearing. The victim was a cement finisher. Atwell, also a cement finisher, had just returned to Winn Parish after living in Alabama. The two men had been on the lake all day, officers said. The last drowning on the Winn Parish side of the lake occurred December 28, 1957. Lawmen from Jonesboro and Natchitoches joined Winnfield authorities in the search. Jordan was a Mason and a member of Big Creek Baptist Church. Two of his sons, Michael and William Jordan attend Winnfield High School. Two daughters, Mary and Linda Jordan attend Westside Elementary School. Another daughter, Mrs. Suellen Turney, lives in New Orleans. Other survivors include his wife, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Jordan, a brother Joe Jordan, four sisters, Mrs. Laura O'Neal, Mrs. Flora Capps, all of Winnfield and Jordan Hill; Mrs. Lillie Coburn, Georgetown, and Mrs. Maxine McCartney, Alexandria. Funeral services were at 10:30 Wednesday morning in the Southern Funernal Home Chapel and burial was in the Jordan Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Harrison Cockerham, Rev. Glynn Griffin, and Eugene Love, Principal of Winnfield High School, conducted the services. Clayton Jordan, Wilfred Jordan, Harvey Jordan, Owne Jordan, Grady Smith, and Gus Crawford served as pallbearers.
