Smith, Atlanta Teacher, Dies On Tuesday James P. Smith, 54 year old Atlanta High School agriculture teacher, died shortly after midnight Tuesday morning in a Winnfield hospital after a prolonged illness. Mr. Smith had taught in the Atlanta School since 1941 except for 19 months beginning in 1945 when he was assistant county agent in Bossier Parish. He was active in church work and had taught Sunday School classes for many years, and served on the board of stewards of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 27 in the Atlanta Methodist Church. Burial was in the Atlanta Cemetery under direction of Hixson Funeral Home, Winnfield. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vara Ferguson Smith, of Atlanta; two sons, Roger and Rayburn Smith of Atlanta; a daughter, Goldaree Smith of Atlanta; two brothers, Charles Smith and Robert Smith, both of Shreveport; twi sisters, Mrs. Wilma Hill, Pollock, and Mrs. Rita Cruse, Ruston. Services were conducted by Rev. Larry Elliott and Rev. Dell Durand. A graduate of Harrisonburg High School, Mr. Smith earned his BS and MS Degrees from LSU. He had completed some work on his doctorate.
