Kelly of Route One, Goldonna, was killed Christmas Eve morning in a one-car accident 20 miles northwest of Winnfield in Ward Ten. Kelly, on leave from Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio, died almost instantly at about 8:30 a.m. when the auto he was driving swerved off the narrow Gibbs road, 500 feet west of State Route 228, hit a fallen oak tree and overturned. Kelly was thrown out and the car rolled over on him. A. L. Rushing, Lake Charles, a passing motorist, discovered the wreck at about 9 a.m. and with the help of other passersby, lifted the car off the body. Dr. John T. Mosley, parish coroner, said Kelly died about 30 minutes before he was found. State Trooper R. S. Jordan of Winnfield, who investigated the accident, said he believed Kelly had turned sharply to the right, possibly to avoid livestock on the highway, and that the car struck the log a glancing blow on the side, causing the vehicle to roll over. Young Kelly was alone in the car, 1 1951 Ford sedan, which he had borrowed from his brother, Floyd, of Goldonna. The are where the accident occurred is known as the Brewton's Mill Community. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 26, at the Antioch Methodist Church in Ward Ten with servicemen of the community serving as pallbearers. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Wayne George Kelly was born April 7, 1937 in Winn Parish and had lived all his life here except for four months in service. He had recently completed basic training. He was a member of the Lackland Air Force Base Methodist Church.
