Davies gedavies@winnfield.net January 18, 2007, 4:06 pm March 8, 1940 Winnfield News-American Virgil Kelly, 33, Takes Own Life At Gaars Mill Suicide by Shotgun Happens Friday March 1 Virgil Kelly, 33, shot himself to instant death at his Gaars Mill home Friday afternoon, March 1. A member of a well-known family in his community, Kelly had been in ill health for some time previous to his death and had a few weeks ago returned from a Pineville sanitarium where he had been under treatment. He had been despondent, according to reports, and had threatened to members of the family that he would kill himself. Friday afternoon, while his wife was out in the garden, he, sitting on a bed in the house, took his shotgun, fixed a stick so he could pull the trigger, aimed the barrel at his head, and shot himself. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Harmony Grove Baptist church of which he was a member, with the Rev. R. L. Bridges, pastor of the Dodson Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was made in the Harmony Grove cemetery. Mr. Kelly is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Amon Kelly of Gaars Mill. He is survived by his parents, his wife, Mrs. Alice Bishop Kelly, two sons, John Huey and Herman; two daughters, Daisy and Gloria Jane; six brothers, Lee Eugene, Chrles, John, and Bobbie of Gaars Mill , and Luther Kelly of Baskin; and five sisters, Mrs. Varvis Folds of Baskin, Mrs. Lawson Pepper of Sikes, Mrs. Maggie O'Hara of New Orleans, Mrs. Randolph Perdue of Jonesboro, and Miss Bertha Kelly of Gaars Mill.
