He had five brothers and three sisters, only two of which survive him - Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Hodges, who now live in Texas. His father died when he was eleven years old. He remained on the farm with the mother til he was twenty two, when he went to Texas, where he worked for his uncle one year, going by way of Mobile and New Orleans. He returned to Alabama in December, 1855. He married Mary James Drewett, December 23, 1857, and this union was blessed with five girls and one boy. All but one survive him. His children are: Mrs. J. W. O'Quin, Mrs, J. N. Fletcher, Mrs. J. F. Fletcher, Mrs. W. B. Teagle and J. C. Killingsworth. In 1858 he moved to Louisiana and settled in Winn Parish, and most of the remainder of his life was spent in Winn and Grant Parishes. At the beginning of the Civil War he joined the Twenty-seventh Louisiana Regiment, under Captain Cooper and Colonel Marks. He was taken prisoner at Vicksburg, and was never exchanged. He joined Sardis Baptist Church of Winn Parish under the leadership of Rev. Daniel O'Quin in 1860. He lived a consistent member of the Baptist Church until his death, being a member of Colfax Church since its organization. He had been in feeble health for about five years; was subject to heart trouble. He was no weaker than common till about two hours before his death, when he took a chill that proved fatal. He was buried at Mars Hill, near Verda. He leaves a wife, five children, a host of grandchildren and many friends to mourn his loss. Let us live in such a way that we shall meet him in Heaven. TWO GRANDSONS. (NOTE: Birth and death dates in this article differ from those in "Briley's" which gives Apr. 3 1834 - Nov. 2 1912.
