According to reports, Mr. Lawrence was sitting upright on the ground at the edge of the car when the pack under it slipped and the vehicle fell on him. He was rushed to a Winnfield clinic but was found to have died enroute. Funeral services were conducted December 29 at 11 a.m. at the New Hope Church with the Rev. R. L. Daily, Nazarene minister, in charge. Burial was under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mr. Lawrence, a farmer, was born and reared in Winn Parish. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nila Lawrence; five daughters, Mrs. Anna Mae McGuire and Mrs. Grace McKenzie of Tyler, Texas; Mrs. Ellen Graham, Winnfield; Mrs. Lavelle Brister, Dodson; and Mrs. Velma John, Monroe; two sons, Neal and Aubrey of Dodson, Route 1; five brothers, Riley, George, Dave, Ben and Henry Lawrence; three sisters, Ms. Abeline Young, Franklin Parish; Mrs. Letha Thomas, and Mrs. Belle Head, Sikes.
