Lewis, 77, Local Merchant Succumbs Sunday Last Rites Were Conducted Tuesday Afternoon At Gansville R. L. Lewis, 77, Winn Parish's oldest active retail merchant, died at the Mosley Clinic here December 31, 1939, with pneumonia and heart trouble. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Gansville Baptist Church with interment in the Old Gansville Cemetery, a short distance from where he was born December 26, 1862. Religious rites were conducted by the Rev. N. E. Joiner of Minden, who was assisted by Rev. Alwin Stokes and the Rev. H. H. McBride of Winnfield. Active pallbearers were P. K. Abel, Judge Cas Moss, Judge R. W. Oglesby, H. W. Stinson, R. D. Cantwell, and Dr. Arthur Chopin of Baton Rouge. For the past 47 years Mr. Lewis has been engaged in the general mercantile business in Winn Parish. Starting at Gansville where he was postmaster in 1892, he operated a store there for many years. After the coming of the Rock Island Railroad, he moved to Dodson and about 25 years ago came to Winnfield and conducted a general mercantile business here until he was stricken with pneumonia about two weeks ago. Surviving are his widow; two sons, Herman of New York City and Max S. Lewis of Griffin, Ark.; a daughter, Mrs. Luther Beene of Shreveport; step-daughter, Mrs. Prentice Bolin, Preston, Cuba; and three sisters, Mrs. D. M. Stone and Mrs. M. Moffett of Winnfield and Mrs. A. W. Wilson of Atlanta, besides many other relatives.
