All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: December 6, 1928 Winn Parish Enterprise William Edward Long Passes Away, Nov. 29 Prominent Citizen Had Useful Life In Winn Parish; Served on School Board The death of William Edward Long, 78 years old, on Thursday, November 29, closed the life of one of Winnfield's oldest and most prominent citizens. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Saturday morning with the Rev. A. H. Cullen officiating. Burial was in Winnfield Cemetery with the Masons in charge. Mr. Long is survived by his wife, four daughters, Mrs. Lula Tannehill, Mrs. Mollie Bell, and Mrs. L. F. Morrison of Winnfield, and Mrs. J. T. King of Brady, Texas; five sons, Rufus H. Long, Winnfield; Wade H. and W. E. Long, Jr., Trees, La.; Dr. Arthur Long and J. W. Long of El Paso, Texas; two brothers, Huey P. Long, Sr., Albert J. Long, Winnfield; four sisters, Mrs. Alice Wright, Mrs. Olive Wright, Mrs. Joan Eagles, of Winnfield, and Mrs. Julia Nugent, Minden; thirty grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mr. Long was one of the twelve children of John M. Long and Mary Elizabeth Wingate. He was born in Smith County, Mississippi, on April 14, 1850. His parents came to Winn Parish in 1859 and he resided here until his death. He was married to Miss Fannie Woodruff on October 1, 1869. Nine children of this marriage survive. As a member of the Baptist church, Mr. Long led an influential Christian life. He joined this church at Corinth in 1872 and later moved his membership to the Baptist Church at Winnfield. He was affiliated with Eastern Star Lodge No. 151, F. and A. M. During his long life in Winnfield Mr. Long has been associated with movements for the advancement of the town and parish. He served as a school board member for twelve years. He was president of the body for eight years. His many friends knew him as generous, affable, and cheerful. M. Hale, Alexandria, La.; Mr. Sidney Tannehill, Mr. Julius T. Long, Shreveport; Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Corbitt, Gilbert; Misses Francile and Virginia Frazier, Natchitoches; Mr. Whitman, Baton Rouge; Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Tannehill, Alexandria.
