Long Dies In Hospital In Alexandria Following Long Illness Following an illness of several weeks George P. Long, vice-president of the Bank of Winnfield and beloved citizen of Winnfield passed away Tuesday night in the hospital in Alexandria, where he had been taken Sunday for an operation. Mr. Long who was 79 years and 8 months old was born in Smith County, Mississippi, January 11, 1849 and ten years later with his parents moved to Louisiana homesteading a farm five miles east of Winnfield. Attending the schools of the parish at that time he went as far as he could and completed his education at Forkville Academy after which he taught school for a number of years before entering the mercantile business. Up until he was twenty-one years he assisted his father on his farm when not attending school. Following one successful business venture after another mr. Long in 1901 was instrumental in the organization of the Bank of Winnfield and for one year served as president of that institution, later vice-president, which office he held until his death. Only once in his life did he consent to serve as an official and then served as member of the Town Council of Winnfield. He is a Knights of Pythias, member of Eastern Star Lodge 151 F. A. M. and Winnfield Chapter R. A. M. He was a faithful member of the Baptist Church of Winnfield. In 1885 Mr. Long was united in marriage with Miss Virginia Garner whose family had come to Louisiana from Alabama and to them seven children were born, six of whom are living, Mrs. Zelma Frasier, Mrs. Aubrey Scott, Mrs. Aubrey Corbett, Gilbert, George P., Jr., Miss Elisabeth Long and Charles Long, Winnfield.
