All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 11, 1984 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Birdie Shumake Long Services were held for Mrs. Birdie Shumake Long, a long time resident of Winnfield, at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 1984, at Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield, Louisiana with Dr. Calvin Phelps, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Winnfield officiating. Burial followed in Winnfield Cemetery. Special music was provided at the service by Jim Bob Key of Natchitoches who sang several of Mrs. Long's favorite hymns. Mrs. Larry L. Price presided at the organ and accompanied Mr. Key. Mrs. Long, 91, died at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 1984, in Alexandria, Louisiana at Wilshire Manor Nursing Home where she had been a resident since 1977. Birdie Shumake Long, whose leap year birthrate was February 29, 1892, was born in the Macedonia Community of Winn Parish. She was the daughter of William F. Shumake and Darinda Stark Shumake whose families were early pioneer settlers from Georgia. She was married to Floyd H. Long in Atlanta, Louisiana on October 1, 1912, and they moved to Winnfield in 1921 where they reared their two sons and a daughter. In August, 1973, she married Charles E. Long of Luling, Texas and Winnfield, a lifelong friend and cousin of her first husband. Charles Long died January 26, 1980. Mrs. Long was a longstanding member of First Baptist Church in Winnfield and in her earlier years was active in the work of the church she loved so very much. She especially enjoyed sacred music and attending hymn singing concerts. Survivors include two sons, Colonel Floyd H. Long (U. S. Army, Ret.), New Orleans, Louisiana, and Congressman Gillis Long of Alexandria, Louisiana and Washington, D. C.; six grandchildren, Frank G. Fletcher, Jr., Judy Fletcher, Leary, Mark Long Fletcher, Margaret Long Pierce, George Harrison Long, and Janis Catherine Long; and four great grandsons, Wilson M. Leary III, Brian and Stephanie Pierce, and Dore' Fletcher. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Winnfield, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society in the name of her late daughter, Doris Long Fletcher, who died of cancer.
