Long, 73, Winn Native, Is Cancer Victim John N. Long, 73, well known lifelong resident of Winn Parish, died in a local hospital Saturday, December 1, 1962, at 9:30 a.m. after a lengthy illness. He was a victim of cancer. Mr. Long was born in the Corinth Community on June 17, 1889, and lived his entire life in wards nine and two of Winn Parish. He was the son of the late Charles Felix Long and Elizabeth Matilda Smith Long, who were among the earliest settlers of Winn Parish. Mr. Long was married to the former Mary Josephine Wright and they observed their Golden Wedding anniversary on October 27, 1962. His body lay in state at his home until time for the funeral services which were conducted in the Calvary Baptist Church, Highway 84 East, at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 2, with the Rev. Charles Christie officiating, assisted by the Rev. Clarence Bates and the Rev. Ralph Frazier. Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were the following nephews: Clinton Allen, J. C. Wright, Doyle Thomas, Robert Kraft, and James Long, Winnfield, Speedy O. Long of Jena, William Gilmore of Mangham, and Joe Tullier of Pineville. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Lavespere, Sid Sanders, Buck Jordan, and Rev. Joel Strange, all of Winnfield. Mr. Long was a retired farmer and school board member, was always interested and active in church, civic, and community affairs; was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and was a charter member of the newly established Calvary Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and because of his ailing health, had declined to serve in the deaconship. Survivors include his widow; two sons, John W. Long of Winnfield, Rt. 2, and Joseph N. Long of Shreveport; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Sasser, Lubbock, Texas, and Mrs. Vera Wells, Winnfield, Rt. 2; five brothers, Morris, Parker, Jim, and Oscar, of Winnfield, and Felix of Tullos; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Gilmore of Mangham and Mrs. Alice Nugent of Pineville; 12 grandchildren and two great granddaughters, and a host of other relatives. One daughter, Mrs. Yvonne Atkins and one sister, Mrs. Caroline Allen, preceded him in death.
