Julius T. Long Dies At Age 86 in Shreveport [PHOTO] Julius T. Long, 86, the oldest and last surviving brother of Governors Huey Long and Earl K. Long of Louisiana and former Eighth District Louisiana Congressman Dr. George S. Long, died early Wednesday morning in a Shreveport hospital. He is an uncle of U. S. Senator Russell B. Long and John Hunt, chairman of the Louisiana Public Service Commission, and a fourth cousin of present Eighth District Congressman Speedy O. Long. Julius T. Long was born in the Tunica Community (now called Corinth) in 1879. His parents were Huey P. Long, Sr., and Caledonia Tison Long. In 1886, his father bought the Col. David Pipes home and 340 acres of farm land here and moved his family to Winnfield. Here on what is now Maple Street, Julius T. Long and all his brothers and sisters grew to manhood and womanhood in the old Long home where the Gov. Earl K. Long Memorial Park is now. After graduating from Tulane Law School in 1906, Julius T. Long began the practice of law here with the late Earl E. Kidd. Later he was a law partner with Judge Wiley E. Jones. In 1912 he was elected district attorney for the Fifth Judicial District, Winn and Jackson Parishes, and served for eight years. In 1921, Julius T. Long moved to Shreveport and began the practice of law there, largely confining his practice to Civil Law cases. In the particular field in which he specialized, he was generally recognized as being one of the best legal authorities in Louisiana, and his practice was statewide. He is survived by his widow; a son, James H. Long; a daughter, Mrs. Carson Reed, Jr.; three grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Clara L. Knott of Many, Mrs. Olive L. Cooper of Natchitoches, and Mrs. Stewart Hunt of Ruston. Among his first cousins residing in Winnfield are Mrs. Zelma Frazer, G. P. Long, Mrs. Net Grigsby, Mrs. Nancy Morrison, and Miss Edith Ann Long.
