Long, 53, died Saturday from a gunshot wound in the chest, authorities here report. Long was living with the George Leach family at Dodson when the incident occurred about noon, Oct. 29. Leach was in the bedroom with Long at the time, Sheriff Sanford Jordan said. The sheriff said that Leach told of Long making past statements that he was going to commit suicide, and on Saturday made such a statement, then snapping a loaded pistol in his mouth before turning it to his chest and firing. Mrs. leach and another woman, Ella Mae Stringfellow, were in other rooms of the house when the shooting occurred. Funeral services were held in the Blanchard Funeral Home in Ruston Monday with burial in the Provencal Cemetery west of Natchitoches. Survivors include a son, Travis Long of Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Dodson, Orange, Texas; Mrs. Nettie Fay Long and Miss Peggy Long, Amarillo, Tex.; four brothers, Huey Long, Toledo, Ohio, W. A. Long, Jr., Shreveport, Norman Long of Natchitoches; five sisters, Mrs. J. E. Mayfield, St. Mary's, Ga., Mrs. J. W. Whitworth, Orange, Tex., Mrs. W. S. Colston, Abbeville, Mrs. Nolan Rhodes and Mrs. Leon McQueen, Natchitoches; and his father, W. A. Long, Sr., of Natchitoches.
