Long, Sr. Funeral services for Rufus H. Long, Sr., 77, well known native of Winn Parish, who died at a local clinic late Thursday afternoon, June 9, were held at the family residence on the Natchitoches highway at 3 p.m. Friday, June 10. Interment was in Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Officiating ministers were Rev. Alwin Stokes, Rev. H. J. Mott, and Rev. H. H. McBride. Mr. Long was born near Winnfield November 14, 1871, and was the oldest son of the late William E. Long and Francis Johnson Woodruff. He had lived in Winn Parish all his life where he engaged in farming and livestock production until he was forced to retire after suffering a stroke eight years ago. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Mr. Long always was keenly interested in both local and national affairs. He was a registrar of voters for 56 years and never once failed to exercise his rights at the polls. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Alice Hand Long; one son, Rugus, Jr., of Hodge; one daughter, Mrs. Lessie Lee Cockerham of Winnfield, and three grandchildren; four brothers, Dr. Arthur Long, Sr., and J. Weaver Long of El Paso, Texas, Wade H., and W. E. Long of Baton Rouge; three sisters, Mrs. J. T. King of Austin, Texas, Mrs. Lula Tannehill and Mrs. L. F. Morrison, of Winnfield. Pallbearers were C. M. Robinson, Rev. Fred S. Flurry, Troy Kyson, Lonnie McConathy, W. W. Shivers, G. P. Long, Dorice Warner, and Jack Tannehill. Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral here, Friday, June 10, were Governor Earl K. Long, Wade H. and W. E. Long of Baton Rouge; Mrs. J. T. King and daughter, Mary, of Austin, Texas; Mr. Emmett Fort and daughter, Estelle, of Beaumont, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. Harold McKinney of Springhill; Mrs. C. E. Tannehill, Murphy Tannehill, and Mrs. Quincy Hardtner, of Urania; Rev. and Mrs. Lee and Mr. and Mrs. Troy Charles of Hodge; and Mrs. Joe Breazelle of Georgetown.
