All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: January 24 & 31, 1963 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Long, Johnson Two Local Men Killed In Auto Crash Monday Funeral services were held Wednesday for two young Winnfield men who were fatally injured Monday night when their 1956 sedans met almost head on at 6:45 on U. S. 84 about three miles west. Victims of the crash were Tom H. Long, 29, and James A. Johnson, 30. State Police reported that Long was headed east and Johnson west when the crash occurred in a straight stretch of road about 400 yards east of the entrance to the rock quarry. Long was pronounced dead at the scene. It took more than an hour to remove his body from the tangled wreckage. Johnson was freed by rescuers within a few minutes and rushed to a hospital here. He was given blood transfusions and transferred to a Shreveport hospital. The fatalities were the first for 1963 in Central Louisiana and the first in Winn Parish since August 1962. Long is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Long of Winnfield; two sons, Stevie and Thomas Lee of Baton Rouge; seven brothers, Colvin, J. W., Carroll, and Gerald of Winnfield, Donald of Lafayette, Billy of Washington, D. C. and Jimmy of Natchitoches; his grandmother, Mrs. Ada Smith, Winnfield. Long was a member of East Winnfield Baptist Church. Services were in the Southern Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Kenneth F. Wall, Dr. W. L. Holcomb, and Rev. W. R. Gage officiating. Burial was in Zion Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Benn, Jerry T., Clyde, Jr., Perry Joe, Charles, and James Hardy Smith. Johnson, a service man, is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Johnson of Winnfield; two brothers, Floyd M. Johnson, Mesquite, Texas, and Donald Johnson of Winnfield; two sisters, Mrs. Cathy Austin, Winnfield, and Mrs. Aline Chambers, Texarkana, Texas. Military rites were held at 2:30 p.. Wednesday at the Bethany Presbyterian Church north of Campti, with burial in the church cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral of Tom Long in Winnfield, January 23, included: Mr. and Mrs. Lee Davis and son, Mr. and Mrs. Cullen Wilson, Thomas, Leo, and Stevie Long of Baton Rouge; Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Gaar, Shreveport, Mrs. Cornelia Johnson, Johnnie, Tony, Jean, and Janice, Houston, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Willis and sons, Alexandria. Mr. and Mrs. Sam L. Maggio, Mr. and Mrs. Scroggins, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Dove, Jimmy Bob Key, Coach Jack Clayton, Cracker Brown, Mr. Gillson, O. Beasley, Charlie Tolar, Sr., Harry Friedman, Sen. Sylvan Friedman, Lelan and Oren Ferguson, Natchitoches.
