E. Machen, 74, Succumbs; Last Rites Held Nov. 11 Mrs. Era Snow Burnum Machen, 74, wife of Henry E. Machen, local highway road contractor and motel owner, died November 8, 1956, at her home here, following a stroke suffered last month. The deceased was a lifelong resident of Winn Parish. Both she and her husband are members of pioneer families of the Gansville Community, and have been residents of Winnfield for the past 36 years. Mrs. Machen was a member of the First Baptist Church, Order of Eastern Star, and of the Homemakers Home Demonstration Club. She was an enthusiastic worker in all three organizations. Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church Sunday at 2 p.m. with Dr. W. L. Holcomb and the Rev. Eugene Langford officiating. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were C. C. Taylor, Lonnie Taylor, Clyde Frazier, Floyd Brantley, Jr., Elmo Frazier, and D. C. Machen. Survivors include her husband, Henry E. Machen, Winnfield; three sons, Otis W., Winnfield, W. H., Jonesboro, and Millard F., Midland, Texas; six daughters, Mrs. Zelma Kiely, Winnfield, Mrs. Mamie Schimpf, Los Cruces, N. M., Mrs. Brazzie Maddox, Valdosta, Ga., Mrs. Clotile Hurd, Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Sibyl Robinette, Andrews, Texas, Mrs. Juanita Pearson, West Germany; one brother, Charley Burnum, Jena; six sisters, Mrs. Bertha Allen, Mrs. Nolan Taylor and Mrs. Jesse Temple, of Dodson; Mrs. Coleman Taylor, Winnfield, Mrs. Charles Smith, Bastrop, and Mrs. Kate Brantley, Lufkin, Texas. She also leaves 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
