Martin Services for Van Breland David Martin of Winnfield, La. were at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 13, in the chapel of Southern Funeral Home with Dr. Calvin Phelps and the Revs. James Simons and Rayford Higgs officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery on the Olla Rd. Mr. Martin, 86, died at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 1990, at Parkview Guest Care Center after a lengthy illness. He was a retired construction worker, a member of Iron Workers Local No. 710 in Monroe, La. Mr. Martin helped build many large buildings in the area including many on the campus of Grambling and Louisiana Tech Universities. Mr. Martin was a member for many years of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was the church's oldest deacon at the time of his death. He was a Master Mason, member of Eastern Star Masonic Lodge No. 151 F. & A. M. of Winnfield. He was born on March 22, 1904 in Ouachita Parish. Van Martin and Mary Bessie McCarty were married June 2, 1931 in Ouachita Parish. Mrs. Martin preceded him in death on February 20, 1988. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Nell Clark of Winnfield; two sons and their wives, Thomas Jerry and Patsy Martin, and Mack Vernon and Andrea Martin, also of Winnfield; three half sisters, Mrs. Bertie Simmons of Vicksburg, Miss., Mrs. Gladys Cole of Jackson, Miss., and Mrs. Myrtle Williams of New Orleans; two half brothers, L. J. Hatten of Mississippi and Edgar Hatten of Columbia, La.; one step brother, Joe Hatten of Winnsboro, La.; one sister in law, Mrs. Beverly Polk of Winnsboro, La.; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews, and many friends. Pallbearers were John Clark, Charlie Clark, Derek Martin, Jed Martin, Felton Maxwell, and Jimmy Hanson. Deacons of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church were honorary pallbearers. The family suggests memorials be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, La.
