Matthews, 86, of Verda, Succumbs After Short Illness William H. Matthews, 86, resident of Verda, La., died at a local clinic Thursday night at one o'clock following a short illness. The remains were conveyed to the Sardis Baptist Church, eight miles south of here, where funeral services were held and interment was made in the Sardis Cemetery. Rev. Henry Kees, Baptist minister of Baskin, La., and Rev. Charley Townsend, pastor of Sardis Church officiated. The deceased was a Confederate veteran, serving in the battles at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill of the Civil War. He was proud of his record as a soldier and enjoyed telling his friends about it. Nine children survive. They are A. T. Matthews of Dallas, Texas; W. V. Matthews of Provo, Ark.; L. T. Matthews of Horatio, Ark.; T. C. Matthews of Verda, La.; R. E. Matthews of Winnfield, Route 1; C. H. Matthews of Hodge, La.; Mrs. J. W. Parker, Amarillo, Texas; Mrs. J. W. Caskey, of Bienville, La.; and Mrs. C. C. Caskey of Saline, La.
