Injuries Fatal To Elmer Mathews Monday Night

Log Falls on Worker As He Unloads Truck At Local Yard

Elmer Mathews, 35, of Route 1, Winnfield, succumbed in the Charity Hospital
in Shreveport at about 11:30 Monday night from injuries received from a log
falling on him and pinning him to the ground, while he was unloading a truck
on the Mansfield Hardwood yard at 3 o'clock that afternoon.

He was picked up and rushed to the Fittz-Faith Clinic where he received first
aid and was then carried to the Shreveport hospital where he died from a
broken pelvis and internal injuries about an hour after arriving there.

Mathews was a student of Louisiana Tech.  Several years ago he decided he
would complete his education so he returned to the Atlanta High School
graduating in 1937 with honors.  He was awarded a scholarship to Louisiana
Tech and attended one term when illness prevented him from attending.  He had
planned to reenter Tech during the winter term.  He had been a member of the
Sardis Baptist Church since his youth.

Funeral services were held at the Sardis Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 5
o'clock conducted by the Rev. W. D. Sherwood.  Interment was in the Sardis
Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Bertie Philan Mathews, and three small children,
Glendon, Meredith, and Jo Ann, he leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. E.
Mathews, three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Smith, Mrs. Nettie White, and Olivia
Mathews, all of Winnfield, and one brother, Robert Mathews of Monroe.
