L. Mathews, Former Dodson Mayor Succumbs Funeral services for James Linton "Runt" Mathews, 49, former Dodson mayor, were held Monday at 2:30 at Dodson Baptist Church. He died Sunday morning after an illness of several months. Rev. Edgar Cripps, pastor of Dodson Baptist Church, conducted the services, with burial in Zion Hill Cemetery near Tannehill, under direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Mathews was in the grocery and service station business in Dodson for several years and served two terms as mayor. He was first elected to the Village Council in 1946 when the village was first incorporated, and in 1949 began serving the unexpired term of the late Maldon Payne. He was elected mayor for the next term and later resigned the office due to ill health. Very active in community affairs, he was supervisor of the Ground Observer Corp unit in Dodson, was active for several years with the Boy Scouts of American in the Southwest District, was an honorary member and on the advisory council of the Dodson FFA chapter, was on the school building committee, and an ardent supporter of the athletic and other school programs. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mamie Kornegay Mathews, and one son, James Lynn Mathews, both of Dodson; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Sanders of Oak Grove; two brothers, Calvin Mathews of Jonesboro and Clinton Mathews of Oak Grove; and one sister, Mrs. Clara Moffett of Tallulah. Pallbearers were Edd House, R. G. Simpkins, J. Y. Terry, Carthal Payne, E. F. Broomfield, Clayton Norred, Paul V. Gaar, and Grover Jeter.
