Mathews of Hodge Buried Here Thursday Native of Winn Succumbs to Lingering Illness Mrs. C. H. Mathews, 45, of Hodge, died at her home Wednesday, July 26, 1939, after a lingering illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Hodge Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. J. W. Buckner, pastor of Jonesboro Baptist Church, Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of Winnfield Presbyterian Church, and Rev. A. H. Cullen, pastor of Evansville, Ind., Baptist Church, officiating. Acting as pallbearers were Jim Carter, John Peters, Pat Harrell, Sion Jenkins, of Winnfield, J. W. Cole, Don McLean, H. E. McKenzie and Bob Spurgeon, of Hodge. Mrs. Mathews, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Mercer, was born and reared in Winn Parish. A devoted Christian, she was very active in church work, having become affiliated with the Baptist Church at an early age. Her membership was in the Hodge Baptist Church at the time of her death. Also a member of the Palestine Chapter No. 55, Eastern Star of Winnfield, she devoted part of her time and interest in promoting the work of this organization. Attesting to the esteem in which the deceased and her family were held was the large and beautiful floral offering. Mrs. Mathews is survived by her husband, one son, Aswell Mathews of Baton Rouge; two brothers, Hugh Mercer, postmaster, and Felix Mercer of Winnfield; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Mercer of Winnfield.
