B. Matthews Succumbs to Heart Ailment Sunday Practiced Medicine Here 22 Years; Was Knights Templar and Mason; Interment Monday Funeral services for Dr. S. B. Matthews, 68, who died in a Shreveport hospital following a heart attack at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, were held Monday afternoon at the First Methodist Church. Rev. H. B. Hysell, pastor of the church officiated assisted by Rev. P. M. Caraway, pastor of the Mangham Memorial Methodist Church, Shreveport; Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Winnfield, and Rev. H. H. McBride, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Winnfield. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery at 3:30 o'clock. Dr. Matthews had been in failing health for quite some time and last week went to Shreveport for medical treatment. A sudden heart attack ended the career of the deceased who had been practicing medicine in Winnfield for 22 years. The deceased was born in Castor and after finishing school there entered the Memphis hospital medical college. He also took a course at the Eye-Ear-Nose- Throat Hospital at New Orleans. Dr. Matthews was a member of the First Methodist Church of this city, was a Knights Templar Mason and a member of the Woodmen of the World. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Wannie Jordan Matthews, of Winnfield; and three sons, Victor F. Matthews, S. B. Matthews, Jr., and W. H. Matthews, all of Shreveport. Two brothers also survive, R. B. Matthews of Castor and Bettie (?) Matthews, one sister, Mrs. Maggie Cloud of New Orleans, and seven grandchildren. The last rites for the deceased held at the First Methodist Church, was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends. Dr. Matthews was well known in North Louisiana and leaves many to mourn his passing. Pallbearers were Messrs. Shirley Jackson, Bryant Sholars, W. W. Allen, C. E. Tannehill or Urania, Roy Taylor and J. M. Hyde. Attending the funeral from out of town were the following relatives: Mr. and Mrs. V. F. Matthews and son, V. F., Jr., Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Matthews, Jr., and children, Elizabeth, Mary Lynn, and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Matthews and children, Virginia, Marguerite and W. H., Jr., all of Shreveport, members of Dr. Matthews' immediate family and Dr. O. F. Mathews, nephew, and Mrs. Matthews, Shreveport; Mrs. Ida Matthews, sister in law, of Urania; Mr. Ermine Fields, nephew, and Mrs. Fields of Leesville; Mrs. D. Duval, niece, and Mrs. Duval, Longview, Texas; Mrs. Johnnie Stewart, niece, Castor; John Jordan, brother in law, Baton Rouge; Mrs. S. D. Jordan, sister in law, Jasper, Texas; Mrs. Viola Simmons, sister in law, Mrs. Kirby Reech and Kirby Reech, Jr., Alexandria. Among the out of town friends attending the services were the following: Rev. P. M. Caraway, Shreveport; Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Tannehill, Urania; Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Williams, Alexandria; M. H. H. Furniss, Tom Wemple and W. E. Stephenson, all of Shreveport; Mrs. Bogan, Castor; James E. Hyde, Alexandria. The funeral was under the direction of the Walsh Funeral Home of this city.
