Campti Man Is Charged In Shooting

Natchitoches - Robert Batts, operator of a night club near Campti, has been
charged with manslaughter.  Natchitoches Sheriff Sam James arrested him in the
shooting of Willie Matlock of Winnfield at the night club early Sunday night.

Batts is now out of jail on $1,000 bond.

Sheriff James said Matlock and Olen McGuire, also of Winnfield, were arguing
outside the club earlier Sunday night and McGuire was shot in the chest.  He
was hospitalized in the Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport in
critical condition.

Sheriff James said Matlock was fatally shot when he attempted to enter the
club reportedly carrying a gun.

Matlock, Batts, and McGuire are all Negroes.
