All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: October 24, 1973 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Sam Mayes, Sikes Native, Dies October 16 A 70 year old Delhi man was found dead in the woods northeast of Waverly in Madison Parish early Tuesday, October 16, 1973. Sam A. Mayes died of an apparent heart attack while hunting. Mayes, who was to meet his hunting companion, the Rev. W. H. Haskell at 9 a.m. did not show up and the Rev. Mr. Haskell started searching for him. According to the Madison Parish Sheriff's Office, Mayes' body was found about a quarter of a mile from the road. Funeral services were held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Delhi United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mr. Haskell officiating. Burial was in Monroe Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Mayes was the manager of the E. W. Thompson Drug Co. of Delhi. Prior to coming to Delhi he was a pharmacist in Ferriday and Oak Grove. He was also a member of the Delhi Methodist Church. He was a native of Sikes, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Vander Mayes. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lillie Jackson Mayes of Delhi; one son, Samuel Jackson Mayes of Delhi; one daughter, Mrs. Roberta Mayes Landis of Winnsboro; two sisters, Mrs. Harold Brown of Alexandria and Mrs. H. P. Tharpe of Delhi; and two grandchildren.
