Burial was in the church cemetery under direction of Riser and Son Funeral Home of Columbia. Mr. Mayes died Friday, December 1, 1972 in Pasadena after a brief illness. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lucille Haddox Mayes of Pasadena; four sons, Roger Mayes of Dallas, Texas, Bobby Mayes of Houston, Texas, and Coy Mayes and Danny Mayes, both of Pasadena; five brothers, D. G. Mayes of Urania, Curt Mayes, Herman Mayes, Jerry Mayes, and Toad Mayes, all of Grayson; two sisters, Mrs. Vivian Gamble of New Orleans and Mrs. Lonnie Smith of Winnfield; and three grandchildren. Nephews served as pallbearers.
