L. McGuffee Of Winnfield Dies At His Home In Harrisonburg Ben F. McGuffee, Confederate veteran who recently celebrated his 92nd birthday at his home at Aimwell, died Saturday after seeing for the second time the evacuation of Fort Beauregard, historic stronghold of the war between the states. He was the father of E. L. McGuffee of Winnfield. "Uncle Ben", as he was known in Catahoula Parish, saw the evacuation of Fort Beauregard by Confederate forces on September 5, 1863, only a short time after his enlistment at Brookhaven, Miss. In March the Fort again was closed by Civilian Conservation Corps officials after its occupancy for several months by CCC workers.
