J. A. McMurry Conducted Sunday Funeral services for Rev. J. A. McMurry, 75, of Pleasant Hill, well-known Baptist minister who had lived in Winn Parish for many years, were held at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, April 18, with the Rev. Alwin Stokes, Rev. H. J. Mott, Rev. H. H. McBride, and Judge Cas Moss officiating. Burial was in Allen Cemetery in Ward Two under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Masonic services were conducted at the grave. Rev. McMurry died of a heart attack at his home in the Pleasant Hill community at 8:30 o'clock Friday night, April 16. Rev. McMurry was born in Arkansas on August 19, 1872, and moved to Winn Parish at an early age. He had faithfully served in the ministry of the Baptist Church for nearly 50 years, during which time he was pastor of a number of rural Baptist churches in North Louisiana. Rev. McMurry had conducted revival services in many cities in all sections of Louisiana and was well known and loved by his many friends throughout the state. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had actively served in that organization, in the ministry, and in other civic and community activities. He had resided on his small farm in the Pleasant Hill community for the past several years. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Clara Collins McMurry; eight sons, F. J. McMurry and Arthur McMurry of Winnfield; Troy McMurry, Elmo McMurry, and Lonnie McMurry of Shreveport; Albert McMurry of Trout; and Homer McMurry and Aaron McMurry of Monroe; and five daughters, Mrs. Parker Long, Sr., of Pleasant Hill; Mrs. Bessie Mixon and Mrs. Oree Allen of Winnfield; Mrs. Lessie Mae Turner of Garland City, Arkansas; and Miss Beulah McMurry of Shreveport. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and five great grandchildren and a host of other relatives. Pallbearers were John Jones, Onus McMurry, Jim Collins, Sodus Collins, Paul Adams, and Julius Beard. A large crowd attended the final rites at Pleasant Hill.
