J. McMurry, General Gas Manager, Dies F. J. McMurry, 61, Winn native, died at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 24, in a local hospital following a short illness. At the time of his death he was branch manager for General Gas Corporation. In the early days he owned and operated Winnfield's Bakery. Mr. McMurry was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge, Knights Templars, Scottish Rite, El Karubah Shrine Temple, Winn Shrine Club, and the Eastern Star. He was active in community, church, and school affairs and served as Ward One member of the Winn Parish School Board for 14 years during which time he was president for four years. Because of his interest in promoting and improving sports programs in Winnfield the local ball field was named the McMurry Field. He was the son of the late Rev. A. J. McMurry, and his mother, Mrs. Clara McMurry, is one of his survivors. Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the pastor, Dr. W. L. Holcomb, and the Rev. C. C. Martin, pastor of the Laurel Heights Baptist Church, officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites was in the Garden of Memories under direction of Hixson Brothers. Acting as pallbearers were Superintendent of Schools Russell Terry, Judge Harwell Allen, Eli Harrell, Cersy Frye, Jr., K. A. Hetrick, O. E. Starks, Glynn Mixon, and Willard Harlan. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Joy L. McMurry; a daughter, Mrs. W. C. Pulley of Garland, Texas; seven brothers, Arthur McMurray and Aaron McMurry of Winnfield; Troy and Lonnie McMurry, both of Shreveport, Elmo McMurry of Florida, Albert McMurry of Jena, and Homer McMurry of Monroe; five sisters, Mrs. Parker Long, Mrs. Beulah McMurry, Mrs. David Mixon, and Mrs. Oree Allen, all of Winnfield, and Mrs. Dick Turner of Longview, Texas; his mother, Mrs. Clara McMurry, and three grandchildren.
