Melton, 96, Succumbs At Home Here July 6 One of Winn Parish's oldest citizens, Marion M. Melton, 96, died at his home on St. John Street at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 1960. He had been in failing health for some time. He was the last of the older Melton clan. Funeral services were conducted at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 1960, with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. E. W. Evans, pastor of South Winnfield Baptist Church. Burial was in the Garden of Memories cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home. Acting as pallbearers were: Roger Melton, David Melton, James, Edward, and Julius Tarver, and Wilburn Garrett. Mr. Melton was born in Winn Parish, the son of emigrants from Marion County, Georgia, for which he was named. He was reared on Cedar Creek about 10 miles south of Winnfield, and had worked in Winn all his life until his age necessitated his retirement. He was married to Miss Caroline McIlwain of Atlanta October 31, 1889, who passed away a short while ago. Mr. Melton was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield. Surviving are three sons, Claude, Fletcher, and Clifford Melton, all of Winnfield; four daughters, Mrs. Wiley Page and Mrs. J. M. Tarver, Winnfield, Mrs. R. K. Garrett, Pineville, and Mrs. W. J. Key, Overton, Texas. He also leaves 23 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
