Melton Funeral Is Set For Thurs. A.M. Winn Parish's first Certified Tree Farmer, Riley C. Melton, 80, died suddenly at his home on the Alexandria Highway at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, 1970. Melton was known as Winn Parish's most successful farmer, being involved not only in tree farming, but also in all types of farming, including cotton, corn, vegetables, and stock raising. He not only tree farmed, but also marketed his only trees, and because of his successful operation, was featured in magazine, Forests & People, statewide publication of the Louisiana Forest Association, with his picture appearing on the cover of the publication. A native of Winn, he was the son of the late Nancy Wright and William Melton, pioneer residents of this area. He was a member of the Georgetown Masonic organization and the Winn Parish Democratic Executive Committee. funeral services will be conducted at the Southern funeral Home Chapel at 10 a.m. Thursday with the Revs. Willie James, Jackie Duplechain, and N. W. Causey officiating. Burial will be in the Melton Cemetery. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lillie Williams Melton, three sons, Bowman, and Huey of Winnfield, and James E. of Oak Grove, La.; one daughter, Mrs. Mamie Younger of Baton Rouge; three brothers, Wright, Lee, and Cranford Melton of Winnfield; two sisters, Mrs. Jean Finch and Mrs. Jewel Keith of Baton Rouge; and six grandchildren.
