D. Melton Dies Sunday Following Extended Illness Former Parish Surveyor, School Board Member and Police Juror William Derrell Melton died at his home six miles south of town Sunday morning at four o'clock following an illness of several years. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the First Baptist Church here with the Rev. H. H. McBride, pastor, conducting the rites followed by interment inthe Winnfield cemetery, with the Masonic burial ritual. The deceased was born in Randolph Gounty, Georgia and moved here just before the Civil War. He engaged in farming when a young man and continued it until failing health forced him to retire several years ago. He at one time served as parish surveyor and also school board member for Ward 1 and later as a member of the Winn Parish Police Jury. He was a member of Eastern Star Masonic Lodge No. 151 F. & A. M. in which he was made a lifetime member in 1925. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Nancy Wright Melton, six sons, Ed, Riley, Wright, and Lee J., of Winnfield; Bill T. and Cranford of Minden; two daughters, Mrs. Jean Fincy of Winnfield and Mrs. Carter Keith of Baton Rouge; one brother, Marion Melton of Winnfield and two sisters, Mrs. J. O. Till of Appleby, Texas and Mrs. Emma Wise of Kilgore, Texas. Active pallbearers were J. K. McLure, John Moseley, E. B. Burke, Bryant Sholars, Fred Welch, and George Hightower. Honorary pallbearers included: W. E. Heard, Dr. D. W. Kelly, Dr. John T. Moseley, Earl K. Long, Henry Dawson, Tom Long, Judge Cas Moss, B. L. Anderson, S. M. Parker, J. G. Pope, S. N. Thomas, Walter W. Allen, C. F. Walsworth, Matt Milam, Frank L. Shaw, John Emerson, Joe Emerson, Mack L. Branch, E. P. Heard, S. E. Jenkins, and J. N. Sowers.
