All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: June 13, 1957 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Negro Drowns When Car Plunges Into Backwater Backwaters along Highway Six, between Clarence and Grand Ecore claimed the life of Mayo Merchant, 48 year old Winnfield Negro last Friday between 10-11 p.m., when his car hit a bump in the road, according to reports, and turned over into the deep waters. Merchant was driving a 2-door Chevrolet, and it was said that he was pinned under the driving wheel in the accident. One other occupant of the car, Bonnie Rhodes, Winnfield Negro, was reported to have said he broke the glass out. The water was between six and seven feet deep along the highway. Merchant was an employee of Hall and Holland Contractors at the time of his drowning, and previously had been employed by Olin Mathieson Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Cleo Merchant, and one daughter of the L & A Quarters.
