Mercer, 78, Dies; Was Lifelong Resident of Parish Respected Member Of Community Interred At Winnfield Cemetery Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church for Pollard Melton Mercer, 78, a lifelong resident of Winn Parish, who passed away after a long illness Sunday morning at the family residence at 1200 Oak Street. The last rites were conducted by the Rev. H. H. McBride, assisted by the Rev. Fred Flurry and the Rev. Alwin Stokes. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were A. L. Sikes, Ralph Dawson, Eck Bozeman, Arnet Garris, Dorice Warner, John Bell, henry Harlan, and Judge Cas Moss. Mr. Mercer is survived by his wife, the former Lillie Ophelia Long, four brothers, Willard Mercer of Curry, Commodore Mercer of Epps, Silas Mercer of Olla, and King Mercer of Winnfield; two children, Felix J. Mercer and P. Hugh Mercer of Winnfield; nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. A son, Albert Godfrey Mercer, and a daughter, Olavee Mercer, are deceased. Mr. Mercer was born January 24, 1871 in the Pleasant Hill Community. He joined the Baptist Church at Beech Creek, and at one time was a deacon in the Cross Roads Baptist Church. He was married to Lillie O. Long on September 14, 1892. Mr. Mercer was a devout Christian and his fine character endeared him to his many friends and acquaintances everywhere. He was a wood contractor most of his life. Previous to 1913 he farmed near Curry. He had made his home in Winnfield for the past 31 years.
