He carried no papers, but told police his name was Joe Meyers (Myers?) From Nashville, Tennessee, and the he was enroute to Alexandria. FBI fingerprint files are being checked to determine if he had previous military, civil service, or perhaps police records. This check will require three or four days. Meanwhile, the body will be kept here. Meyers was picked up by city police after residents in the Payne-Elm Street area called to say a hobo was making rounds from house to house. It was early Tuesday morning Meyers was taken to the city jail. It is common practice, officers explained, to bring in a transient when residents complain. Generally, if arrangements can be made for the person to keep traveling, the lawmen oblige. Meyers was advised he would be allowed to leave the jail and travel on. However, when the evening meal was taken to his cell, he was seated on the floor, a strip of blanket tied to his neck and attached to his bunk. Death was by strangulation, officials said. Lawmen were at a loss to explain any motive for a suicide, but also said no one knew anything about Meyers of his history.
