Funeral services were held in Franklin on Monday for Judge Thomas M. Milling, 75 year old native of Winnfield, and prominent Louisiana attorney and judge. Judge Milling died early Sunday morning at his home in Franklin after a long illness. He retired in 1943 after serving as general attorney for Esso Standard Oil Co. in Baton Rouge. He was a member of a prominent pioneer Winn parish family. Judge Milling was born in Winnfield July 12, 1879, the son of the late Thomas Milling. His mother was a Miss Bryan. He received his law training at Tulane University, and practiced law here for a time. Judge Milling's uncle, Robert Milling, donated the land for Milling Park in Winnfield. Long prominent in the affairs of this state: Judge Milling served as District Attorney of the 23rd judicial district from 1903 to 1912, when he was elected judge of that district. He was appointed a member of the Louisiana tax commission in 1917, and was named chairman of that body in 1919, resigning in 1921 to become attorney for the Esso organization in Shreveport. In 1931 he was named general attorney for Esso, with headquarters in New Orleans, and later moved to Baton Rouge, where he maintained his offices until his retirement. Survivors include his widow, the former Rose Foster, daughter of former Louisiana Governor Murphy J. Foster; a son, Murphy of Montgomery; a daughter, Mrs. Rayburn Monroe of New Orleans; and seven sisters, Mrs. Pollard Harrison of Montgomery, Mrs. Alma McCain of DeRidder, Miss Ruby Teddlie, Miss Lola Teddlie, Mrs. T. E. Stanfill, Mrs. A. B. Cockfield, and Mrs. Alexa Lee, all of Baton Rouge.
